It is times like these that call for us to bring out the best in us. A message From Artist Eddie Colla:
About three weeks ago I was sitting in my studio with 2wenty. We were following the Occupy Wall St. events online and talking about maybe going to New York and doing what we could. I came across an article explaining how Yahoo Mail had been censoring any emails that contained the occupywallstreet web address. That was enough. Enough to make me hell bent on doing whatever it was I could to help spread the message of Occupy Wall St. and show support.
That’s when I started the “ninetyninetoone” campaign. Originally I posted the design online as a free hi-res download for anyone to use to show their support. Very quickly the occupations spread across the country to different cities. OccupySF and OccupyLA soon followed, I change the text on the design to occupysf and occupyla and posted those files. I started getting email requests for layouts from various cities, Chicago, Boston, Sacramento even little towns like Lubbock TX. I posted all the different cities as Hi-res Downloads. This all happened in about a day or two.
I began pasting posters around the financial district in San Francisco, mostly in spots that were visible from the insides of banks. The occupations just kept growing and multiplying in number. I had stickers made and with the help of 57-33 I posted them online. We got slammed with emails for all over the world requesting sticker packs. In about 4 days we shipped about 6000 stickers out to 40 states and 12 countries. The amount of support out there for the occupy movement was just incredible. I think it’s safe to say that the banks and corporations over-played their hand. That level of greed an arrogance is what created this movement. This country hasn’t seen anything like this in my lifetime and it’s just getting started.
