Tell me a little about XVALA and who he is?
Everybody wants to be something they’re not. So I became XVALA. XVALA doesn’t mean anything, its just a way to have exclusivity. The Internet has killed that though. I’ve been XVALA for a while now. Since my first Google search. My Google use started with an Apple.
Where do your ideas come from in regards to creating art and how do you know which idea to act on?
You should never Google an idea before you do it. I was thinking how on the Internet anything is possible. I made up XVALA from my head. At the time I searched Google for XVALA, there were zero search results, no PageRank, no anything. It didn’t exist. I started using it and it started appearing. You can give Google things it doesn’t already know. Google just doesn’t want you to know that.
One of your latest projects is the “Fear Google” campaign. What is the motivation and history behind this project and what do you hope to accomplish?
I wanted to see if I could disappear from Google.
Using Google to spread fear about Google I thought would get me deleted from the Internet. So far it hasn’t. I’m now hoping that every computer user will Google My Wiki.
If you Google My Wiki please be gentle with my information. It’s all I have.
If you could take over the Google homepage for a day, what would you do with it?
If you think about it, Google doesn’t take over its own homepage. What’s the point. That’s because it is the net. Everyone should be the net. I like the idea of being an information network. I like the idea of everybody representing information. I see everything as just pure information. Pure information and that’s all. I’m just like Google. I think everyone should be viewing the information I have.
How do you think new media has affected how people make art?
I’ve lost my sense of memory. If I need to remember something unoriginal Google will tell me what has happened or how information is evolving. Confusing ideas that are just alike also happens a lot now so Wikipedia tries to take network ideas and disambiguate them. I think it all comes down to speed. Slow information is how things happened in the past, realtime information is what’s happening now, what I think about though is the future. Being upset for something that happened in the past isn’t as exciting as being upset for things that are going to happen in the future. Things are going to start happening so fast that nobody will have time to think about right now and the only thing necessary will be to predict the future. In the future, the future of the future is all that will matter.
Post-PC art is my idea on how It’s easier now to be angry about what will be than what has been. It’s just all information flow. I’m making Post-PC art. What I mean is when I distribute a Fear Google sticker Google will know exactly where I am when I put them up. If they don’t like it and if there’s enough information to be had they can predict what will appear and where it will appear.
Information is just a thing with me.
What is Palo Alto Tech?
Palo Alto Tech Company is my neglected art baby that I believe will always remain in a permanent state of incubation.
I have an emoticon friend Hacker (BETA) that’s his name, he and I babysit the site. My other more laid-back emoticon friend involved is Reserve Result. He’s not a Palo Alto Tech Company babysitter but I’d like him to be.
I like tech being my art baby. Tech is a very magic idea. Science is not art but art is always technology. Using information is technology not science. People try to control art and make it formal and make into a science. Controlling things isn’t wrong but it’s boring and destructive.
Tech is just a thing with me.
What do you think of the current state of street art?
Street art is being acquired by Google. It’s also being used inside Facebook and on Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr.
Is fame and money important to you?
An interesting personality is the most important thing to have wether you are you or someone else pretending to be you. An interesting personality is what’s important if your a person or a computer.
What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?
I like the things YouTube inspires. My theory about the creation of YouTube is that its proof of another idea I believe, that… Love from one person just isn’t enough, there’s a lot of porn on the internet that proves that too. The Internet shows us that it’s best to be lucky I guess. There was never a plan to create the World Wide Web as it is. Its appearance is organic.
Who is doing the most interesting things going on in world right now?
Word of mouth Is cool. People want to share things that are useful. Word of mouth is the world we live in. World of mouth is how the Internet works.
What makes you angry?
There was this thing Facebook did called Beacon where Facebook ruined Christmas by making it about what you liked to buy and then telling all your friends your secret-which killed the surprise of it all. Facebook is that creepy other friend that’s trying too hard to be involved… has to know everything your doing, and doesn’t get the hint.
The Internet is a land without feelings. The internet lacks a lot of emotional intelligence but thats what happens when your world is hacked by socially challenged super-geeks.
Also… I like complaining about people who complain. There’s a lot of haters on the Internet.
What are the three favorite pieces you have done an why?
The most useful ideas of mine are Big Sausage Pizza sculpture and my Cucumber sculpture and anything you can search about XVALA on the Internet is useful. These are useful because they lead to more information exchange.
Besides an Internet addiction I have an iTunes addiction. I listen to music from the Cloud on my Apple. There’s a playlist that I put on random. For the Post-PC Ideas I’m putting out now my play list is called Palo Alto. I’ll play the iTunes play list during idea time. The songs usually make the ideas seem better as I think. The music can help determine if ideas seems likable even after ideas are done. As I’m working on this Q&A I’m listening to Party In The USA (Miley Cyrus), Pumped Up Kicks (Foster the People), Kings and Queens (30 Seconds to Mars), Something Good Can Work (Two Door Cinema Club), The Time-Dirty Bit (Black Eyed Peas), Street Joy (White Denim), Closer to the Edge (30 Seconds to Mars), Take It Off (KE$HA), Island (The xx), Home (LCD Soundsystem), Run the World-Girls (Beyonce’), Sun of a Gun (Oh Land), Boom Boom Pow (Black Eyed Peas), Crystalized (The xx), Blow (Ke$ha), Moves Like Jagger (Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilara), White Sky (Vampire Weekend), Party Rock Anthem (LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennette & GoonRock), Wolf & I (Oh Land), and at least six new Kanye West songs.
For future ideas I’ll probably use future music.
What scares you?
It scares me to realize there’s an idea that everyone wants but nobody knows what it is and the only solution is Google.
How would you like to be remembered?
I don’t know… you’re only as immortal as you are entertaining.
Which brings us to now. If you’re bored and just getting by, or If you’d like to help me reach my life’s ambition to disappear from the Internet, stop sitting around. Email firstname.lastname@example.org. All emails will be monitored and tracked. You might get some stickers out of it too.
I hope everybody everywhere gets a chance to put up a Fear Google sticker. Anything thats everywhere is interesting.
Where are you from?
I’m from the Internet. I am from Oklahoma City. I live in Los Angeles and Oklahoma City and more and more I have been spending a lot of time in San Francisco and Silicon Valley hanging with friends.
What are your thought’s on Banksy?
I don’t think of other artists that way. I just see artist as just more information in my computer, more stuff for the network. When you look at what’s out there, it’s more fun to see whats missing and where information is being withheld.
I’ve talked to Richard Prince. I have his email. He singed for me my first edition copy of “Canal Zone.” I like the book. It’s – end of the world – information is great. The information was art. The art was not lawfully made. Richard Prince and Larry Gagosian eventually lost a copyright lawsuit over it.
A court ruling declared Prince’s “Canal Zone” works illegal. The courts decision was to withhold the “Canal Zone” information, to confiscate all the art, all source materials, all books.
I guess I own a legally, illegal work of art. Richard was going through the court battle for copyright infringement when he had me send my copy of “Canal Zone” to him for signing. I imagine him smiling as he signed it for me.
Right now for people it’s a big deal to have the last word on art, what it is, who can do it. It’s a game of say-so where art is the price you pay for other people’s boredom and ambition. The way art is viewed now bores me. I’m more interested in the day computers will start thinking, and people will stop.
